Six of the eight Prince of Asturias Awards already conferred in what is now their twenty-fifth edition
Laureates of the 2005 Prince of Asturias Awards so far conferred are Simone Veil for International Cooperation, the Cultural Institutes for Communication and Humanities, Giovanni Sartori for Social Sciences, Nélida Piñon for Letters, Antonio Damasio for Technical and Scientific Research, and Maya Plisetskaya and Tamara Rojo for Arts.

The 2005 Prince of Asturias Award Juries have bestowed six of the eight accolades that will be presented this autumn in Oviedo by H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias. The Awards for Sports and Concord will be announced in September. The deadline for candidatures for the latter two Awards ends this July 29th.

On 25th May, the Prince of Asturias Award Jury for International Cooperation bestowed the accolade on the magistrate and president of the first European Parliament elected by universal suffrage, Simone Veil, for "the ideals and fulfilment of a united Europe and the propagation of European values elsewhere in the world." To quote the Minutes, the Jury "wishes to highlight her coherence, strength and steadfastness in defence of values and objectives at a time when certain doubts and reticence about the future of Europe and its identity are beginning to emerge."
