The Jury for the 1994 Prince of Asturias Award for Letters, comprising Jesús Aguirre, Duke of Alba, Luis María Anson, Manuel Arce Lago, Pedro Casals Aldama, Juan Cruz, Victor García de la Concha, José Hierro, Rosa Regás, and Antonio Vilanova, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Gonzalo Torrente Ballester and with José María Martínez Cachero acting as secretary, have agreed by majority to award the 1994 Prince of Asturias Award for Letters to Carlos Fuentes, for his defence, in his writings, of freedom of imagination and the dignity of thought; for the contribution made by his work to culture and to universal solidarity and progress for the peoples of the world.
