The Jury for the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research 2003, convened in Oviedo, comprising D. José Luis Álvarez Margaride, D. Juan Luis Arsuaga, D. Carlos Alonso Bedate, D. Antonio Fernández-Rañada, D. Luis Fernández-Vega Sanz, D.ª Montserrat Gomendio, D. Santiago Grisolía, D. Juan José López Ibor, D. Emilio Lora Tamayo, D.ª María del Carmen Maroto Vela, D. Enrique Moreno, D. Rafael Nájera Morrondo, D. César Nombela Cano, D. Fernando Ortiz Maslloréns, D. Rafael Puyol, D. Francisco Sevilla, D. Guillermo Suárez Fernández, D. Guillermo Ulacia, chaired by D. Julio Rodríguez Villanueva and with D. José Antonio Martínez-Álvarez acting as secretary, have agreed to bestow the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research 2003 on Jane Goodall, a pioneer in the Ethology of primates in the wild.

Doctor Goodall has dedicated her life in an exemplary fashion, even in the most adverse of conditions, to her work, which is an outstanding scientific contribution to an understanding of what lies at the roots of human behaviour and culture.

The Jury would equally like to highlight her sincere, committed efforts to provide the results of her works to all the social strata, particularly the world's youth, and her striving to reconcile Mankind's development with the protection of wild life in Africa, and particularly in Tanzania.
