The members of the Jury for the 1989 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, Marta Cantón, Carlos Ferrer Salat, Javier Gómez Navarro, Herminio Menéndez, HRH Alberto of Monaco, Matías Prats Cañete, Marian Renke, Alfonso Rodríguez Allen, and José Luis Vilaseca, gathered in Oviedo on the 6th and 7th of April, 1989 under the presidency of Juan Antonio Samaranch and with Antonio Masip Hidalgo acting as secretary, have agreed by majority to grant this award to Severiano Ballesteros.

The jury wishes to highlight the development of a sporting personality who has managed to reach the position of number one in the world of golf in recent years.
