1991 Award Winners

The Jury for the 1991 Prince of Asturias Award for International Co-operation, Miguel Angel Aguilar, Guido Brunner, Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo, Jordi García Candau, Antonio Garrigues Walker, Toru Ishii, Fernando Morán, Manuel Olivencia and Marcelino Oreja, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Juan José Laborda Martin and with Teodoro López-Cuesta Egocheaga acting as secretary, have agreed to grant the 1991 Prince of Asturias Award for International Co-operation to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, in recognition of the principles which underlie its actions in favour of all those persecuted due to their race, religion, nationality or opinion. With this, the Jury wishes to highlight the needs for nations and governments to co-operate in resolving the grave problems which afflict millions of refugees in different parts of the world and to express their confidence that such humanitarian actions will gain a new boost under the recently assumed presidency of Mde. Sadako Ogata.
