The members of the Jury for the 1989 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, José María de Areilza, Juan María Bandrés, Guido Brunner, Pío Cabanillas Gallas, Emilio Cassinello, Antonio Garrigues Walker, Toru Ishii, Fernando Morán, Manuel Olivencia, Luis Yáñez-Barnuevo gathered in Oviedo on the 18th and 19th of May, 1989 under the presidency of Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo and with Teodoro López-Cuesta Egocheaga acting as secretary, have decided to grant this award to Jacques Delors and to Mikhail Gorbachev for their efforts over recent years to encourage international cooperation and to eliminate the barriers which obstruct understanding between nations.
