The Jury for the 1993 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, comprising Carlos Luis Álvarez, Jorge Fernández Bustillo, Fernando García de Cortázar, Emilio García Gómez, José María Martín Patino, José Luis Pinillos, Jesús de la Serna, and Javier Tusell, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Domingo García-Sabell and with Roman Suárez Blanco acting as secretary, have agreed by majority to grant the 1993 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities to the Mexican magazine Vuelta, founded and run by the writer and Nobel Prize-winner, Octavio Paz.

The magazine Vuelta now constitutes one of the most genuine and rigorous expressions of both Latin-American and Spanish though and literary creation. It should be pointed out that, in its lifetime, it has managed spiritually to unite the intellectual world on both sides of the Atlantic. Its cosmopolitan nature and its relevant concern with widely-varying aspects of Spanish-American life contribute decisively to a greater knowledge of the social reality of both worlds and thus to a possible solution for their specific problems. Lastly, Vuelta, as Mario Vargas Llosa writes in proposing this candidate, "has fought intellectually, in a systematic and incorruptible way, against all kinds of political oppression, religious or ideological persecution, against censorship, inquisitions, dogma, in the name of the democratic culture which, fortunately, we see spreading ever further over our lands."
