The Jury for the 1999 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, convened in Oviedo, comprised of Mr. Gonzalo Anes y Álvarez de Castrillón, Mr. José María Ballester, Mr. Manuel Gómez de Pablos, Mr. Miguel Ángel Gozalo, Mr. Luis Hernando, Ms. Rosa María Malet, Mr. Manuel Martín Ferrand, Ms. María Teresa Ocaña, Mr. Benigno Pendás García, Ms. Trinidad Rodríguez, Mr. Rodrigo Uría Meruéndano, Ms. Amelia Valcárcel, Mr. José Luis Yuste Grijalba, chaired by Mr. José Lladó y Fernández-Urrutia and with Mr. José Antonio Caicoya Cores as secretary, has decided by a majority vote to grant the 1999 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts to the architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, who, before the age of fifty, has achieved well-deserved international prestige and has brought an original interpretation of volume and the use of new materials and technologies to the building of bridges and other constructions in the search for innovative aesthetics.
