The members of the Jury for the 1990 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, Álvaro Delgado Ramos, Elvira González Frax, Javier Mariscal, Manuel Martín Ferrand, Manuela Mena, Miguel de Oriol e Ybarra, and Gustavo Torner, gathered in Oviedo on the 17th and 18th of May, 1990 under the presidency of Antonio Pedrol Ríus and with Jorge Fernández Bustillo acting as secretary, have decided by majority to grant this award to Antoni Tàpies i Puig, the visual artist and aesthetic thinker, who, from Surrealism to the early days of "matter" informalism, has projected over the world, always with creative risk, a singular capacity for innovation which is now summarized in the Foundations, in Barcelona, which is his legacy to the Spanish people.
