Victoria de los Angeles López García, the opera singer, married with two children, was born on the 1st November 1923.
She gave her first concert in 1941 in the Palacio de la Música in Barcelona and, in 1947, she won the Grand Prix at the International Singing Contest at Geneva. She also had great successes in Covent Garden, the Albert Hall in London and in La Scala in Milan.
She made her debut in the Carnegie Hall in New York in October 1950 and in 1951 she was presented there at the Metropolitan Opera House, playing Margarita in Gounod´s Faust and Madame Butterfly.
Victoria de los Angeles retires in 1979 with the opera Pelleas et Malisande. Nonetheless, she has continued to give recitals and she reappeared in may 1985 in Madrid, making a great success at the Teatro Real. In 1986 she performed in Poland, South America, Central America and Japan.
On the 23 December 1987 she was invested as doctor honoris causa by the University of Barcelona. She has obtained the Grand Prix of the French Academy for the best record in 1953, 1955 and 1956. She is also holder of the Gold Medal of the Gran Liceo of Barcelona (1955), the Gold Medal of the City of Barcelona (1958), the Sash of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise (1962) and the 1978 National Prize for Music.
