GUSTAVO DUDAMEL CONDUCTED THE SIMON BOLIVAR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FOR THE FINALE OF THE XVII MUSIC WEEK

The concert was presided by Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias.

Gustavo Dudamel conducted the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra for the finale concert of the XVII Music Week, which was presided by Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias. The Simon Bolivar Orchestra, best exponent of the National Network of Youth and Children Orchestras of Venezuela (2008 Prince of Asturias Award Laureates for the Arts), performed the Symphony No. 2 in C minor "Resurrection" by Gustav Mahler.

The Music Week, which the Prince of Asturias Foundation organized together with Cajastur during the week prior to the presentation of the Prince of Asturias Awards, commenced on Friday 17th October and concluded on 23rd October. Music groups of very different genres and styles performed at this music cycle, which is now in its seventeenth year. Some of the performing ensembles included a viola & piano duo; an oboe, piano, saxophone and percussion quartet; a jazz-guitar and voice duo; and several soloists. The winners of the "Ángel Muñiz Toca" final-year prize for soloists of the Eduardo Martínez Torner Advanced Conservatory of Music also attended the XVII Music Week. A total of nineteen concerts were held in nine different towns of the region: Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés, Grado, Luarca, Mieres, Pola de Lena and La Caridad.

The Music Week recitals were staged in the Cajastur Cultural Centre and the Prince Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo; the San Juan Bautista Collegiate Church in Gijón; the Municipal Centre of Art and Exhibitions in Ávilés; the cloister of the Culture Centre in Grado; La Felguera New Theatre in Langreo; the Auditorium of the Professional Conservatory of Music of Western Asturias in Luarca; the Jerónimo Ibrán Cajastur Cultural Centre in Mieres; the Vital Aza Theatre in Pola de Lena; and the "As Quintas" Municipal Auditorium in La Caridad.

The opening ceremony of the XVII Music Week was held on Friday 17th October, at the Prince Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo with a concert by the Orfeó Catalá, a choral ensemble conducted by Josep Vila Casañas, who bases his performances on the interpretation of Symphony-choral universal literature. The programme was divided into two parts: Central European religious music, which includes Three motets by J.G. Rheinberger, J. Brahms' and A. Bruckner's Ave María, F. Mendelssohn's Blessed are the men who fear Him and Der Erdkreis; and popular music from Catalonia, with traditional songs from the region like El lladre, Muntanyes regalade and La Filadora by Arm. J.S. Marraco and El mirador by Josep Vila i Casañas.

During the day, other concerts took place in different towns in Asturias. The band Jazz Casual, made up of Angie San Esteban (voice) and Alex Jannsen (guitar) performed at the San Juan Bautista Collegiate Church in Gijón. The duo made up of Mei Diyang (viola) and Huang Yameng (piano) performed at the Auditorium of the Professional Music Conservatory of Western Asturias in Luarca.

Los Adioses Orchestra, the pianist Amador Fernández and cellist Viguen Sarkíssov accompanied by Lidia Stratulat, also performed for the XVII Music Week.

Oviedo's Príncipe Felipe Auditorium was the venue for the Music Week's finale concert on Thursday 23rd October. The Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of the National Network of Youth and Children Orchestras of Venezuela (2008 Prince of Asturias Award Laureates for the Arts) gave the concert, accompanied by the Prince of Asturias Foundation's Choir and the soloists Magda Nieves (soprano) and Hadar Halevy (mezzo). Venezuelan maestro Gustavo Dudamel conducted the concert, offering a performance of the Symphony No. 2 in C minor "Resurrection" by Gustav Mahler.
